Post What is the advantage of using an optional leg sensor?
on: January 26, 2012, 15:31

An extra leg sensor yields the additional parameter ‘phase-angle between the legs’ (arms) in the walking frequency band. During regular walking, the phase is 180 degree, during limping it will be substantially lower, like 120 degree.
In amputees, a phase angle < 180 degree indicates that the affected leg is (still) being used in a passive manner; with progression/rehabilitation, the phase angle will go up to 180 degree normal value gain. To illustrate this with a sports example: during 10 km speed skating the phase angle in the curves will be < 180 degrees in USA-trained athletes allowing them to re-gain speed, whereas the Dutch stay at 180 degree, loosing out to their USA trained athletes or for example short trackers.
